I wont make it a huge elaborative text for you to read.. Because intent of writing this note is to understand the usefulness of language as a tool to communicate and barriers.
I was at my friend's place last night. We had a very good discussion over dinner. The agenda was to understand how can we communicate better. There were many things which we discussed about it and then I thought of sharing it with my readers to understand if our conclusion was really effective.
For effective communication, specially while addressing a huge crowd or while conducting an interactive session/discussion, there are following ingredients which are easy to be used and practiced.
- Content-fullness.
- Presence of mind.
- Line of talk.
- Comfort.
- Line of sight.
First two of the above can be sufficient for many people to address and communicate with their audiences. But I, here, writing it for everyone and just not for those 'many' people. May be all what I am writing may sound very obvious but then to them I would recommend not to read further from here. ;) But you would read anyway.. I know!
Lets start with 'Communication' itself. Communication is all about conveying the thought of one person to another, considering the fact that all what was intented to be conveyed has been recieved by other person with same authenticity. Communication can be done with various languages. Hindi, English, French, Pashto, sign language, Feelings, etc. Neh... feeling is not a language, its more of the imagination and assumptions than an acute channel of communication. ;) So in simple english, I speak you understand and you speak I understand, thats it.
So, what content-fullness is all about? Its about preparing yourself for the communication. People with lack of content can easily be tricked and taken off the line of talk. More content and preparation is directly proportional to more control over your speech. Many people use fillers like 'ummm', 'ah', 'eh', 'I mean', 'you know', etc. We do that when we are out of thought or when we are calculating our speech. So, it is always better to know your audience before you prepare yourself for the speech. This way you know what level and complexity of content needs to be prepared. Always prepare your content according to your audience. You cannot talk about trigonometry to a 2 grade kid. It just does not sound right. You would not want to impress them by showing your vast knowledge rather you would tell them about shapes and impress them by sharing such knowledge which will help them.
